Considering the whole book, not just the last third, how would you rate it?

I can't help myself: 3.5 Even though I'm still confused, I have to admit to enjoying the experience mucho. And the very fact that it generated so much
discussion, and passion, adds to the fun.
Looking forward to the next two books.

Can we break up the book? Well, I'm going to anyway. The first third was a solid 3. The middle third was a 2.5 and the last third was a -1 (I finally did
finish by skim-reading, because I wanted to try to understand what you were all talking about, but it gave me a headache!).

2.5 from me. Just too confusing for a better score.

3-ish. A little disappointed in the storyline overall.

I'm going to use Jodi's rating! I think that averages to a 2.

I'd rate it a 3. The first parts were very well done which makes up for the last part.

I agree totally with Jodi but as it ends up...make it a 1 from me. I really can't bring myself to average out those numbers! I can't tell you how
disappointed I was with this book! Darn! I even paid extra for the author's signature which you cannot tell is even there! Phooey! I won't do that
again with any subsequent books of his.

I've been staring at this window for 10 minutes and can't come up with a rating. That never happens to me. Normally if I'm disappointed with part
of the books it brings down the whole book. Yet it's so captivating and intriguing even in its madness that I have to rate it high. But then again, I'm
biased because I loved Shadow so much. So ... I'll say for Zafon fans, a 4. For those who never read Shadow, a 3.

I love your reasoning Monica--I think that's why I wound up in the middle at 3.5

I'm going with a solid 2.5. LOL...wishy washy. I wasn't consumed enough to make it all the way to a 3, but I enjoyed the ride enough to think it's
more than a 2.

I'm going with a 3.5. I read the book ahead of most of you as an ARC -- and in a hurry because I had other books to get to -- and I honestly *thought* I
understood it before everyone else started throwing in all these other ideas about what was going on! I didn't like the thriller portion of the latter
third and that might hinder me in recommending it but... like I said -- I thought I knew what was going on...
If Zafon's purpose was for the reader to make his/her own take on the book, it looks like he did a pretty good job, doesn't it?

3.5 I really liked it, even the confusing stuff and the parts where I had to hide behind my fingers.

I'm giving it a 3.25, for some reason I want more than a 3 but can't give it a full 3.5. I liked the thought it provoked.
